Three types of address in Jaffa

The flat in the old city — stone, arches, a vaulted ceiling, sometimes a small window to the sea. A small space with enormous presence, perfect for a chamber format of up to ten people. The loft in a converted warehouse — common around the flea market and the port: high ceilings, concrete and stone together, room for a large crew. The rooftop — Jaffa's great advantage: a double view, sea on one side and the Tel Aviv towers on the other, and air that is pleasant almost all year. What to know in advance

Jaffa is beautiful, but it is not convenient — and that is fine, it simply needs coordinating. Alleys — at some addresses a car cannot reach the door, so we ask for a meeting point at the end of the street or by the nearest square; one of you comes down for a moment, and that is the entire coordination required. Stairs — in the old city they are narrow and winding, and a costume bag adds a few minutes; no effect on the price, only on the timing. Cold stone — in winter a stone floor is genuinely cold, and a small rug or some heating solves it completely. These three things close in one message, and after that the evening flows.

Jaffa calls for styles with atmosphere. Lilit — stone walls and nine candles are exactly her world, and no place in the city suits her better. Timing in Jaffa

Late, like any area that lives at night: 22:00–23:30 is the golden point, and after midnight is still entirely good time — with no surcharge, under the single price list. In summer the rooftops fill up and it pays to write a day or two ahead; midweek there is usually availability even the same evening. And if the evening begins at a restaurant near the clock tower or the port, give us the hour the meal ends rather than a booking time, and we schedule backwards so the entrance lands right after.

Jaffa's rooftops — a chapter of their own

Nowhere else in the city does a roof give two views at once, which is why half our summer bookings here are outdoor shows. What is worth knowing: the sea wind is real and changes any show involving fabric, a veil or feathers — tell us in advance that the show is on the roof and the set gets adapted. Lighting: two warm lamps or a string of bulbs beat a white floodlight several times over, and it is a two-minute change. And the floor: stone paving or a wooden deck are both fine, just check there are no protruding breaks in the performance area.

Two Jaffas: the old city against the flea market

Anyone who knows Jaffa only from photographs thinks it is one neighbourhood; in practice these are two worlds. The old city and the American Colony — quieter, stone, arches, neighbours who sleep; there the show is built on atmosphere rather than volume, and the chamber format wins. The flea market and port area — alive until late, full of bars and lofts, where full sound and large crews are possible without a second thought. We ask in the first message which of the two it is, because all the planning — hour, style, volume — follows from the answer. What to prepare

A short list that saves a quarter of an hour: a stable chair without armrests; two metres by two of clear floor; two warm lamps instead of the ceiling light; a small place to change — a room, a kitchen, even a roof. In Jaffa add two things specific to the area: a small rug if the floor is stone and the night is cold, and one person who comes down to the end of the alley for a moment. And as always — tell the guest of honour as little as possible. The surprise works especially well here, because nobody expects a show in a flat with arches.

The formats most requested here

Birthdays and bachelor parties split almost evenly here, followed by couples' evenings on rooftops. A duo show works nicely in the large lofts; in the old flats a solo is better, because the space is small and intimate. And if the crew includes guests from abroad, mention it: we have dancers who run an entire show in English or Russian, and in this area that request recurs far more often than elsewhere in the city.

Discretion in the alleys

In Jaffa the streets are narrow and the neighbours close, so our procedure here is especially quiet: an ordinary private car stopping at the end of the alley, everyday clothing, a single bag, and no standing at the door searching for a house number. We ask in advance for a name on the intercom or a short description of the entrance — sometimes "the blue door after the arch" works better than an address.
